We had taken the first step: the farm was ours.

Back then, we were living far away, almost on the other side of the world. Pretty soon it became clear that managing the farm remotely was not going to work and we needed someone we could trust to steer our young company.  Enter Enrico’s father. For the next 5 years, Pierpaolo oversaw the works to restore the olive grove, plant the first acres of vineyards, and begin restoring one of the existing structures.

Our goal was – and still is – to focus on the quality of our products rather than quantity, since we truly believe that “life is too short to drink bad wine”. Thus, it was just natural that we decided early on to embrace ecological sustainability in recovering the land and go organic right from the start. We also believe in the Abruzzo tradition and in the recapture of its farmland, hence our decision to plant the 9 hectares (22 acres) of new vineyard only with native vines – Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Pecorino, and the once forgotten Montonico – and to produce Ratafia following a centuries old recipe.

The farm is in a hilly area, optimally exposed for each cultivar and benefitting from perfect ventilation, which minimises the need to intervene in the vineyard.

That notwithstanding, we are drawn to technological innovation as a means to improve quality and we leverage its power to actively respond to weather variations.  For example, we methodically monitor the network of microclimates across the vineyard and, when needed, activate the emergency micro-irrigation system fed by our very own lake.

But the vineyard was just the beginning. Both Enrico and I undertook intense training in viticulture – the cultivation of grapes – and oenology – the scientific study of wine – to deepen our knowledge and understanding of the art of winemaking.

We followed our passion for wine and our desire to contribute to a more sustainable world, which in turn benefits our native land.

This is our story. Our wine is made with passion, innovation, and dedication to sustainability.

Enjoy Life. Drink Uma.
